Walter Gretzky the father of ‘The Great One’ Wayne Gretzky has passed away.
Walter was 82-years old and battled Parkinson’s disease and other health related issues, according to family statement.
His son Wayne posted a statement on his Twitter page about the passing of his father.
‘The Great One’ shared very sentimental moments in his message stating his late father was the team captain for him, his sister and three brothers.
Furthermore, Wayne thanked his father for being the main reason he fell in love playing hockey.
Wayne recalls his father building a hockey rink in their backyard which can be seen as the catalyst towards his sons illustrious hockey career.
The Gretzky’s lived in Brantford, Ont and there’s an elementary school named after Walter.
Walter was inducted to the Order of Canada in 2007, according to TSN.
Also, he’s written two books and took part in the final leg of running with the torch at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.
